What is the Terjit oasis?

Terjit is a small oasis in the Adrar region of Mauritania, south of Atar, where spring water rises in a narrow canyon and feeds pools and streams shaded by date palms. After hours of open desert, walking into the cool green gorge is a genuine surprise — which is why Terjit is one of the most photographed places in the country.

Visitors come to rest in the shade, bathe in the spring-fed pools, share tea and a meal with the local families who run the site, and spend the night in simple tents or huts at the edge of the palm grove.

Terjit and the iron ore train

• Bring a swimsuit and quick-dry towel for the spring pools
• Wear sandals that can get wet — the canyon floor is rocky
• Respect local families: dress modestly outside the pools and ask before photographing people
• Visit from November to March for the most comfortable temperatures
