Ben Amira — Africa's Largest Monolith
A giant dome of rock rising out of the flat Sahara, a few kilometres from the tracks of the iron ore train.
What is Ben Amira?
Ben Amira (also spelled Ben Amera) is a huge granite monolith in north-western Mauritania, widely described as the largest monolith in Africa and the second largest in the world after Uluru in Australia. It stands alone on a flat desert plain, which makes it visible from far away — including from the iron ore train, whose tracks pass just a few kilometres to the south.
Aïsha and the desert sculptures
A short drive west of Ben Amira stands a smaller monolith, Aïsha. In 1999 a group of international artists celebrated the new millennium by carving sculptures into the boulders at its base, creating an open-air gallery in the middle of the Sahara.
How to visit Ben Amira
Ben Amira is reached by 4x4 across the desert, following the railway. It is usually visited as an extension to an iron ore train trip, with a night of desert camping at the foot of the rock. Ask us about adding it to your tour.
